The Benefits of Being an On-Call Registered Nurse (RN)
Casual nursing can offer a way to consider individual assignments around other commitments. Whether it suits you depends on the opportunities available, the booking process and your circumstances. The term on-call can also mean being available to respond when an employer contacts you; check what the particular arrangement requires.
Scheduling flexibility has limits
Review available shifts against your calendar before requesting one. A request does not guarantee selection, and a confirmed assignment carries its own attendance and cancellation responsibilities. Neither casual work nor a marketplace account guarantees hours or complete control over the schedule.
Experience different settings within your competence
Different assignments may expose you to different teams and workflows. Check the required registration, experience, orientation, duties and support before accepting. A new setting is not permission to undertake work outside your competence or scope.
Compare pay and total terms
Compare the actual rate, expected hours, travel costs, fees and payment conditions. Casual, overnight or short-notice work does not automatically pay more than permanent employment. Consider benefits, paid leave and other conditions as well as the headline rate; gross earnings are not the same as the amount you receive.
Plan for support and rest
Consider travel, rest and your other commitments when assessing an assignment. Ask who provides orientation, clinical support and escalation help. Flexible work is not a guarantee against burnout, and workload concerns should be raised through the appropriate workplace or professional support channels.
