How to Succeed as an On-Call Registered Nurse
Preparing for an on-call or short-notice nursing shift means understanding the assignment before accepting it. This article offers general planning ideas. It does not establish that every on-call role lets you choose your hours or that a marketplace booking is guaranteed.
Confirm the arrangement
Ask whether the opportunity is a booked shift, standby duty or a request that still needs approval. Review the location, hours, role, required experience, rate and applicable terms. Keep a record of the confirmed assignment and the contact to use if something changes.
Plan time and travel
Check the route, arrival instructions and any orientation requirements. Keep your device charged and bring the equipment and documents the facility requires. Allow time for travel and handover. Do not rush or use your phone while driving to respond to a shift message.
Know the local process
Before starting, identify the person in charge, the escalation route and the documentation system. Ask for information needed to work safely in the assigned role. Unfamiliarity with a setting is a reason to clarify expectations, not to guess or skip a necessary handover.
Communicate changes early
Tell the designated contact promptly about an expected delay, an assignment concern or a change in availability. Confirm that the update has been received. Follow the applicable professional and workplace requirements when handing over care or reporting a safety issue.
Plan rest and seek support
Consider whether the shift fits with your other work, travel and recovery time. Raise fatigue or workload concerns through the appropriate workplace channel. If stress or exhaustion is affecting your health or ability to work, seek support from a qualified health professional or an available workplace support service.
Individual planning cannot resolve unsafe staffing or other organizational problems. Health Canada's nursing retention toolkit includes organizational support and working conditions alongside scheduling considerations.
Review opportunities through Staffy
Staffy is a marketplace connecting professionals and healthcare organizations. You can review opportunities that fit your availability, but qualifications and an application do not guarantee selection. Confirm payment timing, fees and cancellation terms in the current guidance and the terms applicable to your assignment.
Editorial correction, October 20, 2026: unsupported percentages about nurse exhaustion, multiple workplaces and burnout have been removed. The article now distinguishes general preparation advice from guaranteed work or health outcomes.
